RyLee Madison will present her Behind the Song Café
at the first annual 'Indie Buzz Bootcamp' Music Conference
in St. Louis, Missouri, June 20-22, 2008. Organized and
presented by Bob Baker, a teacher, speaker and author
of the "Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook."
"I first saw RyLee Madison perform during Nova
Scotia Music Week. I was immediately impressed with her
knack for songwriting and her voice, which is perfect
for the country music style she creates. Little did I
know that I'd soon become friends with her and when she
offered to put on a 'Behind the Song Cafe' at my first
Indie Buzz Bootcamp event, it was a no-brainer. Absolutely,
she was the woman for the job. What a blessing!"
~Bob Baker~
Bob says INDIE BUZZ BOOTCAMP is a new, one-of-a-kind weekend

Life
lifts up RyLee Madison
Singer-songwriter’s work as a Red Cross
volunteer in the wake of Hurricane Katrina brought her
into contact with the storm’s victims and forever
changed her perceptions
By ANDREA NEMETZ Entertainment Reporter
LIFE
will never be the same for RyLee Madison after viewing
it from the Houston Astrodome in the wake of Hurricane
Katrina.
"It
was beyond comprehension. It’s so hard to put into
words. It was completely life changing and an eye-opener
as to what’s really important in life," says
the Nova Scotia-raised singer-songwriter who was already
a Canadian Red Cross Ambassador when she volunteered for
a Red Cross relief mission to the hurricane-ravaged region
a little more than a year ago.
"It’s
important to be with the people you love. The families
there had great love and compassion, a strong faith. It
blew me away. They believed God had better things in store
and this was a process they had to go through. And they
were truly appreciative of the efforts of the Red Cross."
During
her 21 days in Texas, Madison, who now splits her time
between Halifax and Nashville, was asked to perform at
a wedding the Red Cross put together at the Astrodome.
The four-time Music Nova Scotia award-winner sang the
emotional Life When You View It From Here, which she had
written on the eve of the Iraq war with Scottish singer-songwriter
David Leask.
"It
took on a whole different meaning. The words ‘In
this life the best thing is love’ said it all,"
recalls Madison, who had recorded the song a few months
previously for her new album Me and Cinderella.
The
radiant redhead officially releases Me and Cinderella
Wednesday at Stayner’s Wharf in Halifax (with shows
at 7 and 9 p.m.) and a portion of the proceeds goes to
the Canadian Red Cross.
"It’s
a great organization and it’s a wonderful thing
to be able to help spread the word, to bring awareness
to the Canadian Red Cross, awareness of the service they
provide," she says, noting during her time in Houston
she worked in public affairs, meeting people like Hilary
Clinton and Jesse Jackson. Oprah’s camera crew was
there for an entire day. "I was honoured to dig in
and help," she says.
Ironically
two members of her team were from Charlottesville, Virginia,
where she had recorded her third disc with Grammy-nominated
producer John Jennings, who also provides guitar and vocals
on the title track.
The
album also features Nashville’s Harry Stinson, who
has recorded with Randy Travis, George Strait, Reba McEntire
and Trisha Yearwood (among others) on percussion and drums,
and Grammy Award-winning Jon Carroll on keyboards and
vocals. Among her songwriting collaborators are Canadian
country star Patricia Conroy on Stuck To Each Other and
locals Dave Carmichael (Beautifully Simple) and Dave Gunning
(You Can’t Bring Me Down).
Madison,
whose debut album the life of rylee was released in 2003
(she also released a Christmas album in 2004), was thrilled
to work with Jennings, well-known for his longstanding
collaboration as producer and guitarist for Mary Chapin
Carpenter. Mickey Quase, former manager of the Rankins,
who have also worked with Jennings, initiated the partnership
when he sent Jennings some of Madison’s music.
"Let
the Sun Back In was the song that got his attention. I
call it my 10-minute song. I wrote it in front of the
TV. Stevie Wonder was talking about taking the blinds
from his eyes."
Jennings
decided that the album should feel like a "chat with
RyLee instead of something manufactured," that the
"swampy, saucy" Me and Cinderella should be
the title track, and that Farewell, an emotional version
of the anthem Farewell to Nova Scotia, should be the disc’s
final song.
"I
was down in Virginia working on the record, feeling a
bit homesick and I was warming up for the next set of
tracks playing Farewell To Nova Scotia in a soft, quiet,
haunting way. The majority of people do it as a party
number, but it’s a really sad, melancholy song about
a devastating situation," she says, noting Jennings
had never heard the traditional tune before and was eager
to try recording it with just Carroll on the grand piano
and Madison in the vocal booth.
Madison
says they didn’t use the song’s full name
as they wanted to leave some intrigue and mystery about
what she describes as a haunting, intriguing song.
"In
one of those amazing twists of fate, someone in Toronto
wanted to put Farewell to Nova Scotia on the tribute album
to John Allan Cameron and Mickey said he knew just the
version of the song for that, so it’s on the John
Allan CD. To be included is quite an honour, he’s
such a legend."
The
cover shot of Madison also has a haunting, intriguing
quality. Clad in a gorgeous, fairy tale dress, Madison
looks like a romantic storybook princess in front of the
stone gatehouse in Point Pleasant Park.
"The
fog rolled in just as we started taking the pictures,
it created a very mysterious evening — it was July
18, the day after my birthday."
With
songs titles like Me and Cinderella and Juliet, it’s
not surprising Madison, who grew up in Lower Sackville,
is a hopeless romantic who believes in Prince Charming.
And
like a fairy godmother she wants to make dreams come true
for a lucky family of fans.
Until
Feb. 9, those who purchase the album will have a chance
to win a trip for four to Disney World "to hang out
with Cinderella."
"Someone
said it was like the gold ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory," noting she brought some wonderful sponsors
on board to help make the trip possible.
The
winner will be announced at the Behind the Song Café
at the East Coast Music Awards in Halifax on Feb. 17 at
Stayner’s.
Madison
will also be part of Nova Scotia Music Week Nov. 9 to
12 in Liverpool and is now booking a Christmas tour for
the first and second weeks of December. She plans to return
to Nashville around Christmas but will be back in Halifax
for the ECMAs Feb. 15 to 18.
Those
looking for the album can purchase it at CD Plus, Music
World, Sam’s, the Hank Snow Country Music Centre,
and from her website, www.ryleemadison.com.
Admission
to Wednesday’s CD release concerts is $6.
